Starting Your Kitchen Composting Journey with Compost Genie®

Welcome to the world of composting. Whether you're already living sustainably or just starting to reduce food waste, using a kitchen compost bin is a simple and a practical first step.

The Compost Genie® countertop bin (4.92 L) is designed to make collecting food waste effortless and convenient — right where it happens: in your kitchen.

Why Start Kitchen Composting?

Kitchen composting helps reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill, where it can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

By separating food scraps from your garbage, you:

  • Reduce household waste
  • Support local council food waste programmes
  • Create nutrient-rich compost for gardens (if composting at home)
  • Contribute to a more sustainable, circular system

In many areas across the UK, food waste collection is either available or becoming mandatory, making a countertop caddy an essential kitchen tool.

Getting Started with Your Compost Genie® Countertop Bin

Place Your Bin

Position the Compost Genie® bin in a convenient spot on your worktop. Its compact, modern design fits neatly into most kitchens without taking up unnecessary space.

Choose How You'd Like to Use It

The Compost Genie® countertop bin can be used with or without compostable liners available on the market (approx. 5 L / 1.1 gal).

  • Built-in hooks help secure compostable liners in place.
  • Without liners, simply use the removable inner bucket.
  • Once full, lift out the inner bucket and empty it into your outdoor compost bin, garden composter or council food waste caddy.

Start Collecting Food Waste

Add your everyday kitchen scraps as you cook or clean up.

What Can You Compost?

If composting at home, your bin works best with a balanced mix of materials.

Suitable Food Waste in the UK:

  • Meat and Fish: Raw or cooked, including skins and fat.
  • Bones: Chicken carcasses, fish bones (avoid large dense bones).
  • Dairy: Cheese, yogurts, and solid butter (though avoid pouring in liquid milk).
  • Plate Scrapings: Leftover pasta, pizza crusts, sauces, and "ready meal" scraps.
  • Pet Food: Wet or dry food that your pet didn't finish.

Always follow your local council's food waste guidance if using kerbside collection.

Composting vs Recycling

Composting turns organic food waste into nutrient-rich soil improver. Recycling processes materials like paper, glass and plastic into new products. While both are eco-friendly, they serve different purposes and require separate bins and handling.

Check Local Council Guidelines

Before using compostable liners, check whether they are accepted by your local authority. Some councils require food waste to be placed loose inside their provided caddy liners. Following local guidance ensures your composting efforts are both effective and compliant.

The Benefits of Kitchen Composting

By collecting food waste separately, you reduce landfill waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, support soil regeneration and contribute to a more sustainable home.

The Compost Genie® countertop bin makes everyday food waste collection simple and convenient.
